WHICH ARM SHOULD YOU TAKE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE FROM:

Measure your blood pressure in both arms when you first start. They will give slightly different readings. From then on, use the arm that gave you the higher reading each time.

Always use the same arm. If possible, use the arm that your doctor or nurse uses when they measure your blood pressure.

HOW TO TAKE YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE:

Step 1: Remember 30 Minutes - It’s very simple do not measure your blood pressure within 30 minutes of eating, smoking, drinking caffeinated drinks or exercising. All of these can raise your blood pressure temporarily and we don’t want that.

Step 2: Sit And Relax For 5 Minutes - Take a seat and relax for 5 minutes, sit at a table and have your back supported with your arms firmly on the tablet and feet flat on the floor.

Do not cross your legs and if you need to use the toilet then go to the toilet because all of these can increase our blood pressure reading.

Step 3: Place The Cuff 2 Fingers Above Elbow - Stretch your arm out with the palm facing upwards, the cuff should be placed 2 fingers above your elbow and firm enough so you can just put in 2 fingers tips.

Step 4: Cuff Position - Some cuffs have a little dot or stripe that you align with the middle fingers others require the tube to run down the middle finger. This allows the machine to detect vibrations and calculate blood pressure so it’s critical this is done right as per the instructions. Always read the blood pressure machine instructions!

Step 5: Final Checks - Click start remember whens its working no moving, chewing, talking or laughing all of these affect the readings.

Step 6: Take TWO readings - Once you’ve got your first reading you’re then gonna wait a minute and repeat it again. Pro Tip: If your first reading is much higher than the next, ignore it and take an extra reading.

Step 7: Monitor Your Blood Pressure And Lifestyle - probably the most important part of this video because I see so many patients who either don't know what their blood pressure readings mean or don't know how to analyze and review them. Download my blood pressure monitor pro app to help you with this!
